Spelling Sssnakes

Neela, age 9, California

HI!! I'm Piper the boa constricter i love spelling and today i'm going to be in the....world famous spelling sssnake (i've herd about spelling bees but bees can't spell)i hope i win!!! My best friend corny is participating to and he is really good.my mom Jazzey drives me and corny to the park and there it is!! The tent is there and it is so,so big! We slither in and  a fairly handsome porqupine greets us and lets us in,me and corny slither on to the stage and find our cages  I slither in and there is a mike and a mouse (a live one) i  stick my tounge out and get a good whiff. I start to feel really nervous as all the others trickle in. Corny looks at me and sticks his tongue out at me and winks and smiles - our sign of good luck.

The announcer, Gabby, the Gerbal, announces each of our names and when she comes to me she says, “Peeeeper.” How embarassing! Then she announces the word ‘Thesaurus.’ At first I think ahhhhh! But then I realize that I study my thesaurus all the time and I know how to spell it. Corny studies his dictionary! Then we start trying to spell it. Everyone (including Corny) spells it a little off. Then it come to me. I do my best not to start chasing the mouse around. I close my eyes and spell T-H-E-S-A-U-R-U-S. I open my eyeas and… Gabby says, “looks like one point for Piper the boa constrictor.”

Yessss! I start slithering my favorite dance, the Cha-Cha-Cha. Two times! Gabby announces the next word, “Acknowledgements.” Yessss! I always look at the acknowledgements in my atlas! I don’t get over excited, but what I do do is focus on the audeience which always helps me. When it is my turn I close my eyes and think good thoughts. A-C-K-N-O-W-L-E-D-G-M-E-N-T-S. “And again, Piper wins,” says Gabby. I cannot believe it, but I am ready for the next word.

“Introduction.” Oh. Oh! Oh! I love to write intros in my books. I wait patiently and my my mind goes to the fat wiener dog in the audience. Before I know it it’s my turn!! I close my eyes and… I-N-T-R-O-D-U-C-T-I-O-N. Gabby says, “Piper is our winner, congrats Piper.”

I can’t believe it!!!!! I slither to get my trophy and go to my mom. I give her a big squeeze. Yay!! When she comes to me she says.
